If you want to understand journalism in its entirety, you cannot separate practice and theory—only those who know both aspects can understand it in all its fulminant impact and significance.

Anna Fabienne Makhoul joined the Journalism Department as a Research Associate in October of 2018. Her teaching and research focus on journalism research, special interest and specialized journalism, political communication, especially in the triangle of topics media, migration and integration, as well as media effects and persuasion research. She is also part of the team of the German-French Master in Transnational Journalism at the Department of Journalism.

In addition to research and teaching, she is currently pursuing a PhD in specialized journalism research with Prof. Dr. Tanjev Schultz. She is also an active volunteer member of the board of the Alumni Foundation of Mainz Journalists.
As a freelance author, Anna Fabienne Makhoul writes (among others) for AZ Mainz, Fachjournalist.de and various other online magazines and journals.

Before joining the Journalism Department, she studied media management, communication science, law, English and French languages and literature at the Technical University of Ilmenau, the Université de la Sorbonne Paris and the Johannes Gutenberg University.

During and after her studies, Fabienne Makhoul worked as an editorial assistant at ZDF in Mainz and in London, at SWR, ARD coordination 3sat, in the multimedia initiative of the Ministry of the Interior of Rhineland-Palatinate and as a freelance author and editor for various online magazines and newspapers/magazines in the Rhine-Main area. In the winter semester 2017/18, she received her first teaching assignment at the Department of Communication in the field of specialized journalism research.
