Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jessica Kunert has been Junior Professor for 'Innovation and Gender Research in Journalism' at the Journalism Department since December 2021. Her research and teaching focuses on digitization in journalism through data and algorithms and the social impact of digital communication processes. Topics she is researching include the use and impact of automated reporting in journalism and the perception of new immersive formats by news recipients. In addition, Jessica Kunert researches the working routines of investigative journalists and devotes herself to the special experience of female sports fans.

Jessica Kunert is spokesperson for the Media Sports and Sports Communication section of the DGPuK (German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies)
Jessica Kunert studied Political Science at the University of Hamburg from 2007 to 2010. Her Master's studies took her to the London School of Economics and Political Science from 2010 to 2011, where she graduated with distinction in 'Politics and Government in the European Union'. After her studies, she did her PhD at the Center for the Study of Democracy at Leuphana University of Lüneburg from 2012 to 2015 on the self-presentation of national Members of Parliament and Members of the European Parliament on their personal websites. Her further academic path and her enthusiasm for the impact of digital media then led her to communication studies. Thus, from 2015 to 2018, she taught and conducted research as a postdoc at the Department of Media and Communication at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. From Munich, she went to the Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Hamburg from 2018 to 2021. Since December 2021, Jessica Kunert has been Junior Professor for ‘Innovation and Gender Research in Journalism’ at the Journalism Department.
