Requirements for an application

  • Applicants must be enrolled at the JGU Mainz at the time of application
  • Study of a communication or media science course: journalism, audio-visual publishing, journalistic science, communication science, corporate communication, media management, film studies, theatre studies, book studies
  • Bachelor students must have completed at least the second semester at the time of application

  • University of Memphis
    Feb. 15 for the academic year or fall term
    July 31 for the spring term

Application materials

A list of the application documents required by the respective host university can be found below in the download section. All application documents (including the expert reports) must be submitted in English. Proof of sufficient language skills is also required.

The application documents must be submitted as a PDF file; postal submission is not required. All applicants are responsible for the completeness of their application documents.

Scholarship benefits and financing options

  • Waiver or reduction of tuition fees at the host university (exception: student activity fee, similar to the German semester fee)
  • Academic advising and support at the host university; assistance in finding accommodation
  • Students are responsible for other living, travel, and insurance expenses, but may inquire with the International Affairs Office about other funding opportunities
  • For semester stays at the University of Memphis, funds from the DAAD group program ISAP will be applied for; funding is contingent upon approval of these funds. The m3+zdf application is automatically also considered an application for this program
  • For stays of two semesters (Aug.-May only!), undergraduate and graduate students can apply for annual DAAD scholarships; application deadline is the Oct 1 of the previous year.
  • Students eligible for BaföG can apply for AuslandsBAföG. Further information can be found here

Selection procedure

The partnership officer, Prof. Tanjev Schultz (FB 02, Journalism Department), and the International Affairs Department of JGU jointly compile a ranking list of applicants, which is forwarded to the partner universities together with the application documents. The final decision on admission to the program lies with the partner university.

Other

  • For the duration of the stay abroad, all rules and laws of the American host university also apply to the students in Mainz Students must comply with the insurance regulations at the host university
  • Students are responsible for applying for the required visa
  • Mainz students will have non-degree-seeking student status at the host university, i.e., there is no provision for obtaining a degree. Students are expected to take the same number of courses at the host university as American students, but at least 12 credit hours per semester
  • The respective department at which the credits are to be recognized decides on the recognition of American study credits at the home university. Since a stay abroad within the framework of an ISAP may not lead to an extension of the duration of studies, students are required to have the respective study office confirm that the courses they intend to attend in Memphis will be recognized as academic credits before beginning their studies abroad
  • All participants in this exchange program will submit a report on their study abroad experience to the International Office of the University of Mainz, without being asked to do so, one month after their return.
