Open Doors

Exhibition of the Creative Media Lab in winter semester 24/25 | 27.01.2025

Open Doors

by Philipp NeuweilerJens Hartmann

‘Coffin break’, radio play cosy corners, photo-audio gallery, workshop test … there was a lot to discover and experience in the Medienhaus.

Rarely have so many visitors gathered in the basement of the Medienhaus. The occasion was the ‘Open Doors’ event, which presented student work from this semester’s Creative Media Lab, among other things. These included an interactive radio play about a love affair with an AI, a web project about loneliness, a children’s story about impermanence, a photo story collage about ‘being at home’, an exhibition about death, a workshop concept for schools about ‘being a man’ and reels about music and emotions.

An additional highlight this semester was the joint presentation with the course ‘Performing Gender in the Media’ (FTMK). One floor up, the doors to the Film Studies lecture hall were also open and led to the ‘Dissecting Gender’ exhibition, which focussed on the media representation of gender roles. Both courses were united by the desire to try things out creatively: All participants ventured into the unknown through their practical media work and presented their results in public for the first time. All the better when the work receives such a positive response.

It also became clear what interdisciplinary, creative collaboration makes possible. All projects extend beyond the respective subjects and thus promote important skills for studies and careers. Special thanks also go to our co-operation partners from the Master’s in Psychology, the Offener Kanal and Mainz University of Applied Sciences. A lively exchange, as we would like it to be for the future new Medienhaus, with many more open doors.
