right-wing. extreme. dangerous.
The lecture series concludes with a screening of the documentary film ‘Riefenstahl’ and a masterclass by director Andres Veiel.
In the lecture hall, in the cinema or during informal discussions after the events - with ‘rechts. extrem. gefährlich’, Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Johannes Gutenberg University have brought students and the general public into conversation with filmmakers. The aim: to raise awareness of the dangers of right-wing violence - and the challenges of portraying it on film.
The lecture series came to a (provisional) end with a visit from Andres Veiel, one of the most renowned directors of politically engaged film in Germany. In conversation with the students, he gave a deep insight into his toolbox.
Insight and understanding are two fundamentally different things.
‘I want to know Riefenstahl with this film. Many have accused me of risking applause from the wrong side. But insight and understanding are two fundamentally different things,’ says Veiel.
At this point, special thanks once again to the financial supporters of our series, above all the Rhineland-Palatinate State Centre for Political Education. And the announcement: It will continue next winter term!
