Project week in Paris 2026

by Philipp NeuweilerJens Hartmann

As journalists, we chase the truth: word for word. 25 frames per second… sketches are also possible. That’s why our project week in Paris was all about comic journalism. Nine students, five days, four reports.

‘We’ refers to the Master’s programme in Transnational Journalism (Tranama). It is a collaboration between the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the Franco-German University (DFH). Or, as one graduate describes it: it’s like a combination of a kreppel and a croissant. The best of both worlds.

The project week was supervised by Guillaume Amouret, himself a comic journalist and Tranama alumnus. Also on board were Jens Hartmann (communication designer), Philipp Neuweiler (study office, web design) and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Katja Schupp (programme director).

Our comics should be as accessible as possible: bilingual and responsive, i.e. adaptable for desktop and smartphone. And, of course, most of those involved had little to no previous experience. Challenging? Yes. Time-consuming? You bet! But stories in comic form take on a whole new dimension. An intense practical experience. We hope that all participants will take away a lot for the future. At least that a sketchbook and pencil can also be journalistic tools.

The four comic reports can be read on the following website:
