Katja Schupp joined the Department of Journalism as a professor in 2018. Her teaching and research focus on audio-visual journalism, changes in television and new audio-visual formats, storytelling, mobile journalism, journalism and the public, and the financing of journalistic work. In addition to the audio-visual area in the Master of Journalism, Katja Schupp is responsible for the Bachelor’s minor in Audio-visual Publishing, for CampusTV and the Creative Media Lab, an innovative focus project of the Gutenberg Lehrkolleg (GLK) in cooperation with the Institute for Film, Theater, Media and Cultural Studies and the Time-Based Media program of the Hochschule Mainz. She is also the Johannes Gutenberg University’s construction representative for the new media house.

As a passionate journalist, Katja Schupp continues to be active as a filmmaker herself in addition to her work as a professor (www.augenauffilm.de) for 3sat, arte, ZDF and SWR, among others. In her spare time, she volunteers as chairwoman of the Kulturwerkstatt Waldalgesheim e.V. (www.kulturwerkstatt-waldalgesheim.de).

Katja Schupp majored in Modern History at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and also studied German and journalistic science as minors. In 1999 she received her doctorate with a thesis on the “Reception History of the Anabaptist Kingdom of Münster between the French Revolution and the Third Reich”. She then completed the Editorial Journalism program at the renowned Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, USA. She worked at ZDF from 2001 to 2010 in the main editorial department for foreign affairs and in the program area of contemporary history/ current affairs.

In 2010, she entered the field of research and teaching as a lecturer in the International Media Management program at the Deutsche Welle Academy, and in 2012 she became a research associate at the Department of Journalism at the JGU. In 2016, Katja Schupp moved to the Multi-Media Production program at the University of Applied Sciences in Chur, Switzerland, and in 2017 she accepted the call to the professorship for Journalism II- Audio-visual Publishing at Johannes Gutenberg University. In parallel, she has been carrying out long formats on current and contemporary historical topics together with cameraman Hartmut Seifert since 2003.
